About the artist

Gaëtan de Séguin
Gaëtan de Séguin is a sensitive colorist who handles mixed media with virtuosity.
His canvases welcome crowds of individuals who function through their integration into the whole, in a pictorial language on the edge between abstraction and figuration. He assigns roles as if to anonymous characters, extras in a vast scene. Each silhouette is essential to the balance and harmony of the whole. The crowd is synonymous with diversity, where each individual displays the unique traits that make them singular.
The artist invites us to look from different angles. He asks us to zoom in and then zoom out, alternately discovering the detail of his materials and the overall composition of his works.
He covers the canvas with a very dense dominant colour, which is then submerged by light tones where hues blend into a camaïeu of coloured greys. Gaëtan paints in mixed media, seeking material effects and the reactions between inks, acrylic, oil or watercolour, adding or subtracting paint, with brushes and paintbrushes. His colour range, all subtlety, melts behind the motif; the tonal nuances come alive when he creates a mesh through the effect of scratching. Individual, hidden asperities then show through despite the successive layers.
Each asperity, each stripe is a unique motif that characterizes the individual as much as it allows him or her to merge into a much more global and abstract dimension.
Gaëtan de Séguin’s painting is all restraint and nuance, always centred on the search for the individual and their place within the collective.
