Box story Performance

Gatz

Mixed media

34cm x 24cm x 6cm

Original singular piece in an edition of 12 copies

Box stories are miniaturistic works featuring scenographies created from printed images and plastic figurines. Gatz uses small figurines that he paints, dresses and stages in wooden and glass boxes with printed backgrounds to create humorous or melancholy scenarios, drawn from everyday situations or in direct interaction with famous museum paintings. Each box is made of wood, featherboard, paper, anti-reflective glass and 1/87 scale figurines, measures 34 x 24 x 6.5 cm, is signed and numbered 1/12. A nod to Vincent van Gogh's “La Sieste” (1889 - 1890).

About the artist

Portrait

Gatz

Gatz is an internationally renowned miniature artist

Inspired by 1/87 scale model figurines, Gatz created his first Box Story in 2010 as a gift for his girlfriend. Self-taught, carried by the enthusiastic reactions around his stories in boxes, he has since had fun staging characters of 2 centimeters in situations that exceed them.

Gatz turns masterpieces into humorous 3D contemporary works

He's always been drawn to objects with a sense of mystery, such as music boxes, cuckoo clocks and the works of artist Joseph Cornell. Admiring Japanese aesthetics, he builds his scenes in sober, uncluttered universes, working with a selection of materials: wood, polystyrene, foam sheets and paper.

Gatz sees his creations only through the prism of humor, all forms of humor.

Gatz likes to divert figurines from their primary function, inventing a destiny for them. The humor and poetry of the moments he freezes in his boxes are reinforced by the titles that accompany them.
