“Hors les murs” at Barnes Côte Basque
Discover Catherine Parra’s recent works on display at our partner, Barnes Côte Basque. A colorful exhibition showcasing the artist’s diverse styles.
Catherine Parra, born in Lyon in 1965, grew up in Paris before moving to Barcelona in the 2000s. From her teenage years onward, she explored clothing and textiles as a medium for experimenting with colors and shapes. After starting her career at a communications agency, she turned to sculpture, collage, and textile design, repurposing objects and materials (military blankets, coffee sacks, vintage corsets) into one-of-a-kind pieces.
His style, at the crossroads of lyrical abstraction, art brut, and expressionism, draws on the design and art of the 1960s and 1970s: Miró’s floating forms, Le Corbusier’s geometric rigor, and the chromatic intensity of batik, which echoes her own stencil technique. Her work highlights the intimacy and strangeness of everyday life, which she monumentalizes by stripping them of their meaning through supple, primitive lines. The bold, explosive colors contrast with an omnipresent black, unleashing an instinctive, joyful, and vital movement on the canvas.
Her ribbon-stencil technique, applied to large-format pieces of washed linen, embraces irregularity as part of the creative process. In this way, Catherine Parra explores the workings of the unconscious: each canvas becomes a spontaneous expression of an emotional state, a poetic language that traverses joy, doubt, and frustration to touch on universal themes.
