Unique piece

François Bel is a painter, sculptor and installation artist who uses found and recycled objects to critique the materialism and individualism of contemporary society. He imagines weightless worlds suspended in silence. The illusion is perfect. Everyday objects, which he dissects and encrusts into translucent blocks, open up the fascinating world of a parallel dimension. Destructured watches, torn paint cans or tubes of paint in levitation, he freezes the ultimate moment of disintegration, of action. Inaccessible moments, which he makes appear by stopping time.

He imagines weightless worlds suspended in silence. The illusion is perfect. Destructured watches, torn paint cans or tubes of paint in levitation, he freezes the ultimate moment of disintegration, of action. Inaccessible moments, which he makes appear by stopping time.
Subverting the meaning of these everyday objects to critique today's overwhelming consumer culture, he draws on a range of influences from Street Art and Graffiti to New Realism, Pop Art and Dada. Bel is best known for his "Big Bang" series of sculptures, which magically suspend exploding objects, freezing these watches, cameras or paint cans in acrylic glass. Locked in time at a moment that shows their disintegration, the captured destruction gives physical form to the anxieties of the modern age. Bel evokes the inevitability of time passing while reminding us of the importance of living in the present.
