Leif Nyland was born in 1968 in Fredrikstad, Norway. He studied painting and drawing in Oslo and received a Master of Arts degree from the Norwegian Academy of Arts. He also holds a degree in printing techniques.
“I started painting in 1992 after my sister died, due to lack of language I needed a way to express myself, which I found in painting. I guess I have been melancholic all my life, and when I paint I feel it clearly.
Nordic light and symbolism are my sources of inspiration. I tell my story through a kind of landscape.
Many Norwegian artists studied in France a hundred years ago, at the time of Matisse and Cézanne, and there are still traces of that, also in my painting. I have also been inspired by the American post-impressionists like Edward Hopper and Fairfield Porter.
My sources of motivation come from home, with the sea. In the summer, it’s a tourist spot, and the rest of the year, the emptiness is all in its beauty.”
