About the artist

Leo Galamez
Léo Galamez is a painter of botanical abstraction who draws inspiration from the creation of living things.
He draws his inspiration from careful, sensory observation of nature and from the rhythm and vibration of music, both of which fuel the energy of his compositions.
Straddling the line between abstraction and figuration, improvisation and mastery, Léo Galamez’s painting is as powerful as it is delicate. Each work is a window onto imaginary herbariums, leaves twirling in the breeze, and plants that seem to cast rays of light. Nature is alive, in motion, almost musical. The viewer senses the artist’s delight in observing it, smelling it, tasting it: a sensual and joyful relationship with the plant world, marked by curiosity and a love of indulgence. Léo Galamez’s canvases are infused with intense colors, suggested scents, and a resolutely positive energy. The works are free, colorful, instinctive, and structured.
Léo Galamez works primarily on large-format canvas using acrylics. Self-taught, he constructs his compositions by layering plant forms—leaves, stems, and corollas—juxtaposed in saturated, flat areas of color without gradation, which gives his canvases an almost stained-glass-like graphic clarity. This method of cutting out plant motifs and composing them through juxtaposition and layering evokes Henri Matisse’s late paper cutouts, in which the leaf and the arabesque become the very substance of the painting. As with Joan Mitchell, Léo Galamez’s works reflect a nature filtered through sensation and a mastery of color and light.
Galamez’s style thus oscillates between controlled drawing—each sheet is outlined—and a free-flowing, spontaneous gesture, with color sometimes spilling beyond the motif. This tension allows the viewer’s gaze to wander constantly through the work, as if through a forest undergrowth.
The artist’s career has been shaped by his medical studies, which lend his work a unique perspective on life, attuned to rhythms, flows, and balance. Straddling rigor and intuition, science and poetry, his painting celebrates the profound connection between the body, nature, and emotion. Behind the teeming, the unstable, the repetitive, the inextricable, and the chaotic lies the sublime nature of life—as a matrix, as a mysterious necessity—which Léo Galamez seeks to capture and explore.
