Many hours of work and a great deal of patience are required to cut each sheet of mesh to shape the portraits. Thanks to his incredible sense of depth, Jm Collell manages to cut the layers of mesh with a meticulous subtraction technique to create the portrait. His sculptures therefore include areas of high-density mesh alongside the cut-out spaces, giving them a formidable sense of light.

About the artist

Portrait

Jean Michel Collell

Inspired by cinema, photography, fashion and music, Jean Michel Collell is connected to today’s society and his contemporaries. His conceptual gathering of lattices of wire exude the eccentricity and empowerment of his time, illustrating the characters and personalities of his icons.

Born in Nîmes, France, Jm Collell has explored a variety of media including mosaics, painting and sculpture.
More recently, he has turned to portraiture. But not just any kind of portrait: inspired by the technique of cross-hatching, the features of his characters are recreated with such precision that one can see a realistic photograph emerging from a distance. This new production, which requires a particular attention, reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the people appearing on his paintings.

The work requires special attention to the image so that the shapes and shadows form these monochromatic works.

His creations are similar to two-dimensional sculptures. Appropriating the multilayer lattice system, Jean Michel uses their network to create deeper shades in areas of concentration and, alternatively, a sense of light in the areas where the wires are retained.
