She’s been drawing for as long as she can remember. Nature, which is her primary source of inspiration, makes her want to understand in depth what she observes. And it was only logical that, after her art studies, she should take a course in scientific drawing. Later on, her subjects would diversify, but nature would always be a dotted line in her path.
She soon mastered a number of techniques, from oil paint to spray cans. But her choice soon crystallized around a way of drawing, which she discovered for lack of color, and which is that of optical mixing. Combining rigorous drawing and chromatic knowledge, each work created in this way, on small or giant format, is a veritable feat. The technique she develops is based on a succession of colored cross-hatches that eventually combine in the viewer’s eye, offering several levels of interpretation. From a distance, a vibrant, luminous color can be seen, and as you get closer to the detail, the palette splits to reveal each individual color.
We immediately understand the degree of mastery she puts into this practice, demanding to the last stroke and contrasting with the themes she tackles, tinged with gentleness and lightness. And opposites are what she’s looking for, bringing together the precious and the trivial, wild life and the city, or a delicate classical figure on a wall overloaded with tags.
A true heir to the history of the image, she plays with artistic currents and eras, the better to inscribe herself in her own. Using associations of ideas and detour, she mixes images and contexts. And to serve her narratives, she looks for the sideways step to better bring us her vision.
Nadège Dauvergne’s drawings are a tangle of periods and touches, a weaving of stories that speak to us of time, the time it takes for a work to be made, for itself and in its filiation.
So where can you see his creations?
On a street corner, on a city facade, at a gallery exhibition or festival. But also in museums. His work unfolds in the studio or on the street, with or without authorization… or not.
