Discover in situ the superb photographs of two of Muriel Bordier’s series: “The open spaces” and “Les thermes”
Since the mid-2000s, the photographic works, but also the short films, of Muriel Bordier are openly part of a satirical deconstruction of the human landscape. Located in a context in which Dominique Baqué, in his essay L’Extrême Contemporain (Éditions du Regard, 2004), underlines the combined problems of serious objectivism from the Düsseldorf School and subjectivism claimed as such, they develop according to a conceptual journey where the recent series of Espaces museaux, Open Space and Thermes inform a critique of the contemporary imagination of public places. Space stagings of a futuristic nature dominate the human representation of their gigantism, bringing into play the architectural reading of modernism, following a protocol reminiscent of the scenographies of the films of Fritz Lang and Jacques Tati. Expressionism of one, minimalist and ironic caricature of the other. The result is the impression of witnessing burlesque journeys into Lilliputian territories, both funny and frightening, under the pressure of the imperious dictates of such a blinding white cube of light, such a dehumanized spatial configuration in business, such aquatic basins designed like artificial cathedrals for the purification of bodies. Like the pieces of a new Alphaville, less subject to controversy than guided by a disenchanted humor, Muriel Bordier’s images gradually weave the anthropological meshes of a dystopian city – bathed in solitude, irrigated with absurdity, accompanied by the acidulous vision and clinic of a metaphysics of emptiness and nonsense.
